How to Start Building Something New, One Page at a Time

Here's an actual line from my journal last month:

I have no idea what I'm doing, and I'm having the best time.

Both true.
At the exact same time.

I've been building something new, and the journal is where it lives before it lives anywhere else. (Which is the process I've lived by for 20+ years now.)

Long before the camera, before the plan, before I'd said a word out loud to anyone, it was just me and a page and a very messy list of maybe this?

That's the part nobody posts, Reader.

The reel you'll eventually see is thirty polished seconds. What it doesn't show: the fifteen takes, the messy office, the 4 a.m. spiral where I'm sure the whole idea is silly. The page is where I sort the fun from the fear so I can actually keep going.

Here's the thing I keep relearning: you don't wait until you feel legitimate to build the thing. You build it on the page first (sloppy, unsure, one entry at a time) before you've earned the right to call it real. That's how I built my business years ago. Same notebook energy. The page is the rehearsal room nobody else gets to see.

Here's the move. Open to a clean page and split it down the middle. On one side: everything you're excited about with the thing you're making. On the other: everything you're scared of. No editing, no being fair to yourself, no making it sound good. Just empty both pockets onto the page.

You'll notice something. The excited list and the scared list are usually about the exact same things. That's not a problem to fix. That's just what building something looks like from the inside.

Your one small thing this week: write one page about the thing you're building — the fun and the fear, together, uncleaned-up. It doesn't have to be a big thing. A garden counts. A hard conversation counts.

Then hit reply and tell me: what are you building right now, even if it's tiny and unfinished? I want to hear about the messy middle, not the finished version. One line is plenty.

Deep breaths. Just write.

Krystal

P.S. The thing I'm building, in case you're wondering: a YouTube channel about journaling, bloopers and all. It lands in a few weeks, and I'll wave you over the second it's live.
